Q. What is CHART?

CHART stands for Community Healthcare Alliance of Research Trusts, a collaborative network uniting NHS Community Trusts to advance healthcare research within community settings. CHART has grown to encompass not only community trusts but now includes all organisations interested in out of hospital or community research.

CHART aims to facilitate and enhance research efforts that improve patient care and health outcomes in community settings across England.

NHS Community Trusts, research institutions, healthcare organisations, individual professionals, and other organisations involved in healthcare research are welcome to join CHART.

We offer a platform for networking, sharing best practice, accessing funding opportunities, and collaborating on community-based research projects. We also provide a collective voice that works in collaboration with the NIHR & (National Institute for Health Research) CRN (Clinical Research Network) to raise awareness of barriers or challenges to community research.

There are opportunities for participation in research studies, providing feedback, and contributing to the research process to ensure it meets the community’s needs.

While CHART primarily focuses on England/UK-based research, we welcome the opportunity to discuss potential collaborations with international partners that align with our objectives.

CHART is currently not funded; we rely on the voluntary contribution of the working group. Members attend a bi-monthly meeting online and no finances are required to join the alliance.

CHART developed from a need identified by R&D staff supporting research within the NHS, it has developed from local organisations building an alliance. All activity is in line with the UK policy framework for Health and Social Care and all activity will be in line with national policies e.g. NHS 5 year forward plan. CHART activity is supported by the NIHR and local CRN’s.

As an alliance the CHART working group have terms of reference and a mission statement, they provide an annual report which is escalated to all alliance members, local CRN’s and the NIHR. The report includes an action log and risk management log which can be escalated if needed.

We prioritise portfolio research (i.e. studies funded by open competition) however we are keen to support all.

By compiling research findings and representing the collective voice of community trusts, CHART engages with policymakers to inform and shape effective healthcare strategies.
